Mr Riggs comes to Coonawarra. He knows from good red wines after tours of duty amongst the illustrious Cabernet vineyards of Napa Valley and Bordeaux. A collation of parcels from the Thomas and Harrison Weatherall vineyards in the northern precincts of Coonawarra, fermented on skins and pressed to a selection of new and seasoned oaks. Nestled amongst the undulating slopes of Brokenback Range, the Mount Pleasant wineworks were established in 1921 by industry legend Maurice O'Shea. To this day, Mount Pleasant retain the most distinguished vineyards, reaching out from their environs in the Hunter Valley to secure parcels of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon which are second to none. Inspired by their sterling efforts under the Brand's Coonawarra label, the McWilliam's team have applied their winning touch to a harvest of the finest fruit, achieving a generous and approachable Cabernet wine.

Mildara was at the vanguard of the rediscovery of the Coonawarra region. In 1953 Mildara's Ron Haselgrove bought 12,735 litres of Coonawarra red wine from Bill Redman. Ron loved Redman's wine so much, hewas inspired in 1955 to purchase Mildara's first 12.5ha of the Coonawarra's famous Terra Rossa soil. This latest release is a luscious woody fruity wine with elements of earth, chocolate sponge and red berries.

Excellent Langtons Classification. One of the Coonawarra's most feted marques in Cabernet Sauvignon. The Majella property was originally acquired for the purpose of grazing lamb. Eric Brand of neighbouring Laira Vineyard offered to buy fruit from Majella if the land was turned over to Cabernet. The site was planted in 1968, much of the vintages that followed went to Wynn's, but it was not until 1993 that Majella vinified and bottled its own estate labelled wine. The inaugural release was enthusiastically received and Majella have never looked back.

Sydney Hamilton was a highly accomplished oenologist who established the Leconfield brand in 1974, at the ripe old age of 76. His commemorative label is crafted from the top cut of Cabernet Sauvignon, hand picked off the original estate plantings, vinified in Sydney's favourite old fermenter, finished in a luxurious selection of completely new Dargaud Jaeglé French oak hogsheads and aged an extravagant twenty nine months. Outstanding Langtons Classification. John Riddoch founded the historic Coonawarra Fruit Colony at Katnook in 1890. Odyssey was first released in 1996 to celebrate the centenary of Katnook's first vintage under an ancient Coonawarra woolshed. Much of Odyssey's fruit can be traced back to the original sites established by Riddoch over a century ago. The brilliance of its appearance in the glass, identifies the splendour of Odyssey, an abundance of fruit, luxury oak and substantive palate, make it a wine of the highest peerage.

John Riddoch brewed up Coonawarra's second vintage in 1896 under a woolshed which now ages barrels of Katnook Cabernet. The original Coonawarra Fruit Colony itself was headquartered in a limestone building which now serves as cellar door. Vines have been trained over the course of decades to extract maximum flavour from the long slow Coonawarra ripening, achieving harvests of Cabernet with ripe generous flavours and fine lingering tannins.

Jim Barry was a sage of Cabernet Sauvignon, he established the finest blocks of vine and was rewarded with the most distinguished accolades. His legacy of superlative editions Cabernet Sauvignon endures, the finest of vintage from the Jim Barry Coonawarra estate vineyard at Kirribilli. Beautifully poised, lifted floral perfumes to start, blackberry briars and cassis, a measure of earthiness and forest floor complexity, a palate of magnificent breadth and length, the terra rosa savouryness and dark cherry tannins in support, as the fruit continues to ripen and bloom.

Jim Barry seized the opportunity to acquire the heritage Penola cricket ground in 1950. The original pavilion was retained and vines were established around the cricket pitch. It endures as the spiritual home of the most memorable Coonawarra vintages. The fruit for this wine was harvested from mature low-yielding vines on the Jamiesons Run most northerly Coonawarra vineyards, and grower vineyards east of Penola. A warm and sunny vintage ensured the fruit developed ripe berry flavours, moderate acid and fine, ripe tannins, the vines produced small compact bunches of small berries with excellent colour and regional varietal flavours. Ravenswood Lane is the link between the Hollick Coonawarra Vineyards, namely the Neilson's Block. First vintaged in 1988, Ravenswood is only released when the wine satisfies the very exacting quality parameters set by the Hollick team. The best parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Hollick vineyards are earmarked for Ravenswood, typically the fruit comes from the oldest vines growing in very shallow Terra rossa soil. The reason behind it's runaway success is no big secret to anybody who has ever enjoyed Oomoo, a splendid wine with superb fruit character and an affable structure that's fashioned to be a joy to drink. Oomoo comes to Coonawarra in search of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, the nose is highly appealing with requisite violet and cassis perfumes, the palate is brimming with melt in the mouth cherry bramble flavours, the oak is stylish, the tannins inseparable and judiciously firm.

Coonawarra Cabernet has established itself as a unique genre of Australian wine. The vibrant Terra rossa soils which lie under tiny Coonawarra's superlative vineyards, impart powerful flavours and magnificent richness to the finished wines. From fruit grown to one of Coonawarra's most eninent small vineyards, the superior Brand's Laira Block 1, planted in 1971. The precious vines yield scant harvests of the most extraordinary quality grapes which translate into the most remarkable wine. McWilliams reserve the elite parcels from this treasured viticultural asset to construct a pure single vineyard wine, one of the nation's great editions of Cabernet Sauvignon.

McWilliams have long expressed an affinity for the unique red earth soils which consistently yield the big boned, statuesque style of Australian red wine. Plant a six inch nail, water it and in a year you will have a crowbar! said John James McWilliam when he surveyed the ferrous red soils of Hanwood in 1913. Today, McWilliams own and operate many of the most salubrious terra rosa sites in Coonawarra, retaining the pick of the crop, for a pure Cabernet wine from the prestigious Laira Vineyard.

Captain Stentiford established his Shiraz vineyard in 1896, naming the property Laira after a merchant trader. Plantings of Cabernet came much later and have since been the source of memorable single vineyard wines. Laira's exceptional character shines when the grapes are fashioned into a pure Cabernet wine, encapsulating the combination of climate and soil, aspect and fruit, that stamps this historical vineyard with individuality. The flavours are distinctly Coonawarra, but the perfume and succulent fruit characters are conspicuously Brands Laira.

Distinguished Langtons Classification. Doug and Emma Bowen hold a very strong belief in the hand pruning of vines. Such old fashioned care improves evenness of budburst, bunch exposure and ripeness, for restricted yields of the most intensely flavoured Cabernet grapes. A holistic management of the soils is crucial, all plantings are closely husbanded and individually managed, local fauna is encouraged to be a part of the ecosystem. It is this painstaking nurture of the vine which translates into an enduring quality of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Excellent Langtons Classification. Exclusively estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Coonawarra's finest. The low yielding vineyard, planted to the magical Terra rossa soils, is dry grown and hand arch cane pruned, it traditionally yields limited crops of intensely flavoured fruit. Skilled use of traditional oaking techniques achieves a wine that's integrated and seamless, as delicate fine grain French oak supports the essential Coonawarra characters of violets and bramble berry, scorched earth and blueberry cassis perfumes.

Doug Balnaves was a shearer of Merino sheep, recording his count in the tally book to be paid by the number he had sheared. He now counts down the days until vintage, as with all releases of Tally Cabernet Sauvignon, it is the harmony and fine balance which are the outstanding features. A perfectly perfumed Coonawarra bouquet, brambleberry and dark cassis, elderberry, violets and mint. Its unbridled elegance and extraordinary length of palate, fragrant of coffee and oreo oak, supported by the finest grain tannins. Assembled from wines across several vintages, a selection of well aged stocks matured in seasoned casks, topped up and rotated according to the ancient Solera system. There's a strong synergy between grazing and viticulture, Doug Balnaves knows about both. He managed sheep before taking up a career as a grower, he now plays a senior role in many of South Australia's principal wine industry associations. His vineyards yield the finest Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and his fruit is crafted by one of the nation's most peer respected winemakers.

The Balnave vineyards are divided into small blocks of between one and two hectares, the character of each can be quite unique. The final assemblage of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is a compilation of selected rows off the estate's Walker, Quarry and Dead Morris blocks, treated to varying regimens of oak barrel ferments and extended macerations.
